Bayer - 2002: The merger with Aventis CropScience
Shionogi K.K. added many market-leading products to the
product portfolio, including Basta SL, a popular non-selective
contact herbicide; MR. Joker,
an insecticide with a unique spectrum of activity; and Rovral,
a standard fungicide for use in horticulture and orchards.

Australia - 2002:
There are chemicals under consideration (or reconsideration)
or being evaluated for use as termiticides
in Australia that are currently used with varying
success in other countries. One of the more interest ing
variations is Silafluofen (C25H29FO2Si),
an insecticide (pyrethroid ether) containing silicon, used
in Japan for soil and timber treatments against termites
and other pests since 1991. It has become popular
because it has low toxicity to fish and mammals, and it
is highly stable chemically (Nakayama et al., 2001). Antitermitic
plastic sheeting and antitermitic heat insulators have been
developed by impregnating silafluofen
into plastic film and polystyrene
foam.

Abstract: The tumor-promoting activities
of 5 commercial compounds used in termiticides were measured by
a cell-transformation assay employing Bhas 42 cells. Their initiating
activities were also measured by the microsuspension assay employing
S. typhimurium TA98 and TA100 strains. The results of the transformation
assay confirmed the tumor-promoting activities
of fenitrothion, silafluofen and
bifenthrin. Furthermore, the mutagenicity
of S-421 and fenitrothion were also confirmed. Consideration
of 2-stage carcinogenesis suggests that concurrent use of and
long-term exposure to these compounds that have tumor-promoting
and initiator activity, and compounds exhibiting either type of
activity individually should be avoided as much as possible.
