Peanut farmers applaud Environmental Protection Agency's approval of broadleaf herbicide
TIFTON, Georgia--Peanut farmers across Georgia praise the Environmental Protection Agency for their recent approval of the pre-emergence broadleaf herbicide flumioxazin for the 2001 growing season. Southeastern peanut farmers have been instrumental in the approval of flumioxazin by meeting with the Environmental Protection Agency and stressing their need for the broadleaf herbicide in order to control weeds.
"Flumioxazin is one of the most consistent herbicides for the control of Florida beggarweed and has no serious rotational crop restrictions," says Eric Prostko, extension weed scientist with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Science. Field studies have shown that flumioxazin helps control Florida beggarweed, one of the most troublesome weeds in the southeast, by 92%.
"We are very pleased with EPA's decision to register flumioxazin," says Joe Boddiford, chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commission. "This has come just in time for peanut farmers and can really help reduce costs of their weed control programs."
Peanut farmers also express thanks to U.S. Senators Max Cleland (D-Ga.) and Zell Miller, (D-Ga.) as well as U.S. Congressmen Saxby Chambliss, (R-Ga.), Sanford Bishop, (D-Ga.) and Allen Boyd, (D-Fla.) for their help in expediting the approval process. Their offices played a significant role through letter writing efforts and meetings with EPA officials.
Flumioxazin will be sold under the trade name ValorTM and distributed by Valent U.S.A. Corporation. For more information call 1-800-6VALENT (82-5368) or visit Valent on the Internet at http://www.valent.com.
