Geological
Survey, Reston, VA. |
From July
1994 through May 1997, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperations
with the Department of Energy, sampled 86 wells completed in
the Snake River Plain aquifer at and near the Idaho National
Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). The wells
were sampled for a variety of constituents including one- and
two-carbon halocarbons. Concentrations of dichlorodifluoromethane
(CFC-12), trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11), and trichlorotrifluororoethane
(CFC-113) were determined. The data will be used to evaluate
the ages of ground waters at INEEL. The ages of the ground water
will be used to determine recharge rates, residence time, and
travel time of water in the Snake River Plain aquifer in and
near INEEL. The chromatograms of 139 ground waters are presented
showing a large number of halomethanes, haloethanes, and haloethenes
present in the ground waters underlying the INEEL. The chromatograms
can be used to qualitatively evaluate a large number of contaminants

- Experimental Investigation of PIC
Formation during CFC Incineration.
Authors:
Kryder G, Springsteen B
Energy
and Environmental Research Corp., Irvine, CA. |
Experiments
were conducted to assess: (1) the effect of residual copper
retained in an incineration facility on polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin
and dibenzofuran (PCDD) formation during incineration of non-copper-containing
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and (2) the formation of chlorinated
and aromatic products of incomplete combustion (PICs), including
PCDD/PCDF, during incineration of CFC recycling residue and
hydrochlorofuorocarbons (HCFCs). The study of the effect of
residual copper on PCDD/PCDF formation included repetition of
a test conducted in FY 91 in which high levels of PCDD/PCDF
were measured during incineration of dichlorodifluoromethane
(CFC-12). Final rept. Jan-Jul 95. Sponsored by National Risk

stations were made on a section extending along 170 deg W from
5 deg N to 60 deg S, on a short section crossing the Southwest
Pacific Basin to the southeast of New Zealand, and on a short
section along 32 deg 30'S east of the kermadec Ridge. Measurements
of dissolved and atmospheric dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-12)
and trichlorofluromethane (CFC-11) made by the SIO and NOAA
groups are compared in this report. Also included in the report
are hydrographic data (measurements of salinity, temperature,
pressure and depth) collected by NOAA/PMEL investigators during
this expedition. Data rept. Prepared in cooperation with Scripps

Authors:
Weinreb MP, Chang IL

DC.
American Univ., Washington, DC. |
In July
1985 the authors performed an infrared solar occultation experiment
with a balloon-borne, non-scanning, multi-detector grating spectrometer.
From the data, the authors retrieved simultaneous mixing ratio
profiles of ozone, water vapor, nitric acid, and CFC-12 between
12 and 35 km. The retrieved ozone and water vapor profiles were
compared with concurrent in-situ measurements with electrochemical
concentration cells (ECC's) and frost-point hygrometers, respectively.
The retrieved ozone profile was in good agreement with the correlative
data. The retrieved values of water vapor mixing ratio, while
close in magnitude to the correlative measurements, differed
in their altitude dependence. Although the authors had no concurrent
in-situ data for nitric acid and CFC-12, the retrieved profiles
were consistent with measurements in the literature. Technical

A repository
of 14 gaseous organic compounds at parts-per-billion levels
(7-430 ppb) in compressed gas cylinders has been established
by the Environmental Protection Agency. This repository was
established to provide audit materials for use in conducting
performance audits to assess the accuracy and precision of Principal
Organic Hazardous Constituent (POHC) measurements, especially
those performed during hazardous waste trial burn tests. Five-
and nine-component mixtures in a balance gas of nitrogen were
prepared in aluminum cylinders for use in the performance audit
program. The five-component gas cylinders contain carbon tetrachloride,
chloroform, perchloroethylene, vinyl chloride, and benzene.
The nine-component mixtures contain trichloroethylene, 1,2-dichloroethane,
1,2-dibromoethane, acetonitrile, trichlorofluoromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane,
bromoethane, methyl ethyl ketone and 1,1,1-trichloroethane.
Studies of all 14 gaseous organic compounds were performed to

toluene (108-88-3), methyl-ethyl-ketone (78-93-3) (MEK), ethylene-oxide
(75218), Freon-12 (75-71-8), toluene-diisocyanate (26471-62-5)
(TDI), methylene-chloride (75-09-2), ethylene-dichloride (107-06-2),
perchloro-ethylene (127-18-4), and methylene-bisphenyl-isocyanate
(101-68-8) (MDI) at Cobe Laboratories, Incorporated (SIC-3840)
in Lakewood and Arvada, Colorado, from August 13 to 15, 1979.
Medical questionnaires were administered to 140 workers. The
evaluation was requested by individual employees on behalf of
an unspecified number of affected workers. Measured concentrations
of isopropyl alcohol, cyclohexanone, THF, toluene, MEK, ethylene-oxide,
and Freon-12 were undetectable. Environmental samples collected
for methylene-chloride revealed concentrations ranging from
15 to 187 parts per million (ppm) compared with the OSHA recommended
standard of 500ppm. Ethylene-dichloride |

exposure to ethylene oxide (75218) (ETO) and dichlorodifluoromethane
(75-71-8) (Freon-12) were evaluated on March 6 and 7,
1978 in the anesthesia equipment room of Swedish Hospital (SIC-801)
in Seattle, Washington. An evaluation request came from the
hospital administration on behalf of approximately 24 affected
workers. Two 15 minute breathing zone samples of ETO were 28
and 57 parts per million (ppm), respectively. Two general area
samples were 41 and 37ppm respectively. The time weighted average
exposure was approximately 10 to 15ppm. These were below the
evaluation criteria of 75ppm for 15 minute periods. Freon-12
gas concentrations calculated on a ratio basis were well below
the criteria of 1,000ppm. The authors conclude that there is
no hazard from exposure to ETO or Freon-12. They recommend increasing
ventilation, closing the cabinet door and opening the sterilizer
door, and restricting entrance to the ETO area, medical surveillance
preplacement examinations, counselling, and perio

and personal air samples were analyzed for acrolein (107028),
formaldehyde (50000), acetaldehyde (75070), phenol (108952),
propylene (115071), butylenes, amines, ethylene-oxide (75218)
and dichlorodifluoromethane (75-71-8),
at the Xomed Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 13 to 14,
February 10, and September 2, 1977. The evaluation was requested
by the management to determine potential exposures of an unspecified
number of workers. Concentrations of acrolein, acetaldehyde,
and formaldehyde were below the OSHA standards of 0.25, 360,
and 37 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m), respectively. Concentrations
of phenol, propylene, butylenes and amines were below the lower
limit of detection. Concentrations of waste sterilization gases
were above the OSHA standards of 90mg/cu m for ethylene-oxide
and 4,950mg/cu m for dichlorodifluoromethane. Both gases were
later measured at concentrations below the respective OSHA standards
after the installation of local exhaust ventilation. |
