The TSCA Fluoride Trial, 2016 - present

Under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) of 1976, a group of non-profits and individuals petitioned the U.S. EPA in 2016 to end the addition of fluoridation chemicals into drinking water due to fluoride's neurotoxicity. The EPA rejected the petition. In response, the groups sued EPA in Federal Court in 2017. A 7-day trial was held in June 2020, with no ruling by the Court. The next phase of the trial is expected to be in January 2024.

The Fluoride IQ studies

There are now 78 out of 87 IQ studies reporting lowered IQ from exposure to elevated levels of fluoride. Since 2017 we learned that the fluoride level of 0.7 mg/L, the "optimal" level used in U.S. and Canadian drinking water fluoridation projects, can create neurodevelopmental harm to the fetus, bottle-fed infant, and child. The fetus and bottle-fed infant were never considered in any risk assessment for water fluoridation by any regulatory agency in any fluoridating country.

Unethical human experiment in Lenoir County, NC

A human experiment on an estimated 200 infants, starting at age 3-6 months and continuing until they are 4 years old, has raised ethical concerns. The parents of the children are not being informed that fluoride can damage children’s developing brains, resulting in reduced IQ at doses planned for the study. The study, led by dentist Dr. Gary Slade of the University of North Carolina, is intended to help justify expansion of water fluoridation in the US.

Fluoride Studies funded by the U.S. Government

The first U.S. government-funded Mother-Offspring study on fluoride's neurotoxic effects was published in 2017 - some 67 years since fluoridation of drinking water began. There are now more studies since 2017 that have revealed that in fluoridated communities the fetus and the formula-fed infant are the most vulnerable to fluoride’s neurotoxicity. These and other studies funded by the U.S. government on fluoride's toxicity are presented here.

The National Toxicology Program

This section is dedicated to the National Toxicology Program’s (NTP) long involvement with the issue of fluoride's toxicity. The NTP is the scientific research arm for U.S. regulatory agencies. It comes under the aegis of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The NIEHS, in turn, comes under the umbrella of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). -Updated May 2, 2023 (EC).

The Toxic Release Inventory for Fluorides

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency manages the "Toxic Release Inventory" (commonly known as TRI) which was created to provide the public with information about releases of toxic chemicals in their community. It is an essential tool for finding information on chemicals by city, zip code, state, and year. TRI tracks Hydrogen Fluoride, Sulfuryl Fluoride, Fluorine, and other fluoride compounds.

The New Professionals' Statement

November 15, 2018: Professionals are asked to sign a new statement calling for the end of water fluoridation worldwide. This is a response to the new Mother-Offspring fluoride studies which, for the first time, identified the fetus as the most vulnerable to fluoride's adverse neurotoxic (brain damaging) effects. FAN's Translation Project

FAN regularly accesses and translates studies written in other languages, but mainly Chinese. FAN's collection includes over 40 studies examining fluoride's impacts on human health, including its effects on the brain, bones, fertility, the fetus, thyroid, and glucose metabolism.

EPA/Fluoride Files
