Fluoride & Bone Density - Key Findings:
1) Despite the popular belief that fluoride exposure increases bone density, recent epidemiological studies have also found an assocation between fluoride exposure reduced bone mass.
2) Fluoride's impact on bone density tends to differ depending on the type of bone being studied, with increases in density frequently noted in trabecular bone, and decreases frequently noted in cortical bone.
3 ) While increases in bone density are normally associated with a decreased risk for bone fracture, this is not the case with fluoride. According to the US National Research Council: "The weight of evidence indicates that, although fluoride might increase bone volume, there is less strength per unit volume."
