Involvement: For the past twelve years
I have worked almost daily at a national level. I send clean,
highlighted, complementary, documentation packets to private
citizens, council members, and state legislators. My paper
archives number in the thousands, dating back to the 1930s.
I also keep a running list of cities that have quit or rejected
fluoridation since 1990. I enjoy doing radio shows and welcome
all questions and calls for documentation on the issue. |

Involvement:
Group's founder-director is a longtime activist/researcher
in food/animal/pollution projects; an environmental health
analyst since 1986.
Current Activities: Since its formation in early
2002, SMSDWC has attempted via internal efforts to catalyze
scientific investigation into the f-process decided for
this community (pop. 84,000) by its City Council (4-3) in
October, 2001. That decision was remarkable in the sense
it was made without the Council's seeking the advice of
its elite Environmental Task Force (ETF). To this date,
there continues to be much controversy about that factor.
We've tried to work closely with the ETF to catalyze scrutiny
processes. Despite our urgent requests for such and our
presentation of copious scientific data/docs/arguments,
the CC has virtually ignored proactive ETF advisories requesting
a delay and a request for their conducting a Risk Assessment
Study. SMSDW's requests for review also have been continuously
ignored. After some technical delays, this Council's entrenched
pro-F majority is now pushing for a completion of the f-installation
by Fall '04. That notwithstanding the absence of ordered
technical studies, or an Environmental Impact Report, or
Risk Assessment Studies. One of the four entrenched pro-f
Council members tersely summed up its position recently
by remarking "We debated and voted for fluoridation
wrong, right, or indifferent; and I think we should now
move ahead."
What has been the main lesson of SMSDWC to date? That the
respectful and literate presentation of abundant evidence
for-- at minimum-- mere "reasonable doubt" considerations
has appeared to be inadequate for this local City government
to date. However, thanks to increased press interest/coverage
about this negative activity, national attention has now
been brought to this. FAN has been instrumental in making
that possible. SMSDWC intends to insist upon a delay of
this process by every means possible until sound safety
and technical studies are produced--that is, if such production
is possible...from ANY source. |

About Group: Fort Collins Clean Water Advocates
formed as a non-profit in July 2003. We intend to put this
issue on the April of 2005 city ballot.
Background: Fort Collins has been fluoridated since
1967, recently with HFS. In early 2001 Virginia Brown of our
group asked City Council to stop fluoridating. They referred
the question to the Water Board, which researched the issue
and recommended to Council that the city STOP fluoridating.
The city then commissioned a volunteer Fluoride Technical
Study Group chosen by the Health District which studied the
'technical' data for nearly 2 years. Their voluminous document
weighed in favor of continuing fluoridation, but they refused
to consider any of the recent studies, including the Masters/Coplan
and Mullenix studies. The Water Board continued to recommend
we stop, the Health Board recommended to continue, and the
City Council voted in July 2003 to continue fluoridation.
At public hearings for this issue, anti-fluoridationists usually
outnumbered the pro-fluoride speakers. Following this we continued
our education of the public and began to prepare for a ballot
initiative. |

Group's Activities: Update: While
the Fluoride Awareness Team was battling in Winfield, Wayne
Lockbeck was battling in Hutchinson, KS (WLogbeck@yahoo.com).
After wins in both cities, fluoride fighters teamed together
to assist in other battles across the state including Ellis,
McPherson, Harper and Wichita, KS (Dr. Robert Hetrick-- JBH6600@hotmail.com).
While those battles were all successful, unfortunately Newton,
Leavenworth and Maize were well on their way to fluoridation
before we were ever notified. Subsequent efforts to stop implementation
of fluoridation in Leavenworth and Maize were basically too
little, too late especially when dealing with close-minded councils.
By an administrative decision, the Maize Council completely
ignored a referendum petition (legistlative) and allowed fluoride
to flow through their new pipeline. We are currently waiting
on an Attorney Generals' Opinion with hopes of reversing that.
In addition, FAT-KS has proudly assisted other cities nationwide
in defeating fluoridation. Some of these were in our neighboring
state of Missouri... Ozark, West Plains and Ste. Genevieve.
Our newest concerns are in Emporia and Parsons, KS... both are
already fluoridated. Some in Emporia want to change that. Parson's
has suspended their fluoridation for equipment repairs and we
are hoping that we can build a Team there to prevent them going
back online. High hopes. |

Fluoride in Canton: In September 2002, a petition
to stop fluoridation was circulated at St. Lawrence University
in Canton. In less than one week, 125 faculty and staff (including
the Dean of Students and the Registrar) and 250 students signed
it. This petition was presented to the Canton Village Trustees.
The Trustees responded by holding a Hearing on the issue in
December. For a small community of 5,000 residents, the majority
attending the Hearing wanted fluoridation to end. Our Trustees
took the issue seriously, did a lot of homework, discussed the
issue at their monthly board meetings, and in February 2003
they voted 3 to 1 to end fluoridation.. |
