Current National Fluoridation Controversies
On April 9, 2003, the only city in the country of Switzerland to fluoridate its water supply (Basel), decided, by parliamentary vote, to end its water fluoridation program after 41 years (see article). Thus, as it currently stands, the following west European countries have rejected water fluoridation: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The only 3 western European countries which still practice water fluoridation are Ireland (100%), Spain (10%), and the United Kingdom (11%). In Ireland, the most fluoridated country in Europe, and one of only two countries in the world (Ireland & Singapore) with a nationally mandated fluoridation program, there is a mounting national campaign to end the practice. In the UK, a recent effort to fluoridate Scotland stalled out due to fierce opposition, while a recently-disclosed plan to fluoridate all of England and Wales has created a burgeoning national controversy.
Included below are articles discussing the current fluoridation controversies in Scotland, England, Ireland, and South Africa. As is becoming increasingly evident, the addition of a non-essential, toxic, unapproved medicine to the water supply, is an idea that people everywhere find 'hard to swallow.' Even in the United States, the birthplace of fluoridation, over 60 US communities have rejected the practice in the past 3 years.
