About FAN
About the Fluoride Action Network (FAN)
The Fluoride Action Network seeks to broaden public awareness about the toxicity of fluoride compounds and the health impacts of current fluoride exposures.
Along with providing comprehensive and up-to-date information on fluoride issues to citizens, scientists, and policymakers alike, FAN remains vigilant in monitoring government agency actions that may impact the public's exposure to fluoride. FAN's work has been cited by national media outlets including Scientific American, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, TIME Magazine, National Public Radio, and Prevention Magazine among others.
In May of 2004, FAN became an official project of the American Environmental Health Studies Project (AEHSP) - a registered non-profit (501c3) organization. If you would like to support the educational and watchdog work that FAN is currently engaged in, please consider giving a tax-deductible donation today via our secure online payment system.
Examples of FAN's Educational, Investigative, and Advocacy Accomplishments:
Led Succesful Nine-Year Campaign Against Fluoride Pesticide (Sulfuryl Fluoride):
- After a vigorious nine-year effort, FAN -- together with the Environmental Working Group and Beyond Pesticides -- convinced the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to phase out ALL sulfuryl fluoride pesticides from the US food supply.
Uncovered Documents Indicating Scientific Misconduct in Fluoride/Bone Cancer Research:
- In January 2005, FAN uncovered documents indicating that a Colgate-affiliated dental researcher at Harvard Dental School had suppressed and misrepresented evidence linking fluoridated water to bone cancer in boys.
Provided Extensive Information on Fluoride's Risks to National Research Council (NRC):
- Between 2003 and 2005, FAN submitted extensive documentation about the hazards of current fluoride standards to NRC's fluoride review panel and FAN's Executive Director, Dr. Paul Connett, was invited to give a presentation. In accord with FAN's recommendations, the NRC issued a groundbreaking report in March 2006 in which it concluded that EPA's drinking water standard for fluoride is not protective of health and should be lowered
Translated 20 Chinese-Language Studies on Fluoride's Neurotoxic Effects on Brain:
- Between 2005 and 2007, FAN conducted an extensive review of Chinese research on fluoride's neurotoxicity, with a particular focus on fluoride's impact on the developing human brain. After compiling hard copies of these investigations, FAN contacted several translators to translate them into English so that US regulatory agencies and scientists could be made aware of these findings. To date, 18 of the 20 papers which FAN translated have been published, thereby significantly expanding the available scientific literature on this critically important aspect of the fluoride controversy.
Convinced Burlington VT to Issue Fluoride Warning for Infants:
- A year before the American Dental Association (ADA) recommended that infants not ingest fluoridated water, FAN had convinced the city of Burlington VT to make this recommendation to city residents based on extensive data showing that infants were being over-exposed to fluoride. (See: FAN's submission to Burlington's Board of Health). FAN's Campaign Director is now mounting a campaign to convince all water utilities to post infant fluoride exposure warnings on monthly water bills.
